維基百科:強制加密登錄/Petition

You may understand what kind of challenge Mainlnd China's Wikipedian community is facing and what you can do for this issue.

Petition

Dear colleagues, staff of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), and those who cares about the development of Wikimedia (in Asia/ China),

Wikimedia project is posed under the threat of XKeyscore program by the National Security Agency (NSA) of the USA. The WMF has accepted suggestions from some colleagues and decided to redirect HTTP links of Wikimedia project sites to those HTTPS links for logged-in users, starting from 16:00, August 21th(UTC), for the sake of the privacy of users.

However, since June 2013, for some reasons, the HTTPS connection of Chinese Wikipedia has been completely blocked in the People's Republic of China (abbreviated as PRC hereinafter), while the HTTP link is partially censored but not completely blocked. Nevertheless, Wikipedians in Mainland China can still "climb over the wall" or "jailbreak" (i.e. by Virtual Private Networking (VPN), proxy server, or other software to bypass the Internet censorship) to access the free encyclopedia. But most IP addresses of proxy servers (most of which are open proxies) are globally blocked from editing in order to preclude malicious edits. Wikipedians in the mainland may have to apply for rights of IP block exemption if they wished to continue their works (administrators obtain this right automatically).

Here are some of the potential consequences of the WMF's decision: As the PRC authority continues to block HTTPS connection of Chinese Wikipedia, Mainland Wikipedians will have to climb through PRC's internet blocking to gain access to the HTTPS link and edit the encyclopedia's article. Under the policy of banning IP addresses of open proxy servers, some of our Mainland colleagues can only send us emails to create a new account, which will increase our ORTS team workload. Mainlanders' passion and action of participation in Wikipedia may be exhausted by high difficulty. Without them, Wikipedia community in the Mainland is highly exposed to great threat of survival. Though we have heard that the WMF will discuss the issue in the board, we have never been told about what the WMF would exactly do. The future of Mainland Wikipedian community remains unclear. So that we urge the WMF to do something.

It is uncontroversial and convincing to say that Mainlanders have done great things for the Wikipedia. They have tried their very best in editing and protecting Wikipedia. Here is some instances. As what we have actually seen, one of our editors remains committed to handling affairs related to Chinese Wikipedia an its official Weibo account (Weibo is the Chinese equivalent of Twitter). He has done an amazing job. Some donors donate money to the WMF proactively, overcome all the difficulties in the process, though they know the difficulties of the Chinese Wikipedia. Some Wikipedians from the Mainland strive for improving the quality of Wikipedia articles — one of them has translated many a articles about the laws of the USA and made them appear in the "Did you know?" column of Chinese Wikipedia, which precisely fits the values of Wikipedia. An editor has taken photos in his campus, searched for news about it to improve the corresponding article in Chinese Wikipedia, and made this article a good article. In perfecting and practicing the mutual values for the Wikipedia, we endeavour.

Due to this, we urge the WMF to reconsider our request and voice earnestly, before they use HTTPS by default. We also urge everyone to support our action and requests. You can present new suggestions to us to make our work better. You can also spread the letter to publicize the issue.

Your support is important to the Wikipedian community of the Mainland China. Once your support is collected, the situation can be changed.
