Southern (forthcoming)suggests that shm-reduplication arose in Yiddish from a mix of Turkic Echo m-and East Slavic sh-. The Oxford English Dictionary on the other hand sees it as anEnglish-internal development, 「derived from the numerous Yiddish words that begin with this sequence of sounds」. The existence of early Yiddish forms inshm- supports the former theory over the latter (cf. 有些問題想請教一下大家：1、沒圖。common上有和這個相關的圖片嗎？網上有這樣的圖，但以前在英文維基上問過認為這不屬於合理使用。2、ref裡面「Zuckermann, Ghil'ad (2009), Hybridity versus Revivability: Multiple Causation, Forms and Patterns.
