English: Since the British merchant John Dodd first set up a base for manufacturing tea in Dadaocheng, in the production and sale of tea has made Dadaocheng properous. Liu Mingchuan persuaded a wealthy merchant to raise funds to cinstruct houses modeled after Western building along the Tamsui River. Merchant from England, Germany, and America came and opened up companies in Dadaocheng, forming a residential area for foreigners. The new merchants that appearing in Taipei during this time mostly made their fortunes from tea. At its height, more than 60 tea companies gathered on Guide Street, creating a period in which Dadaocheng rode a wave of fortune.
